Ep #21: Why Being in Charge is Better than Being in Control with Deb Upton

I’ve always been an advocate of continued education. Personally, I invest thousands of dollars and countless hours to different coaching programs because I believe there is no better investment than in yourself. My next guest on The Richard Robbins Show shares this same enthusiasm for learning and it has helped her grow the #1 RE/MAX sales group worldwide, representing roughly 500 agents and has received the #1 RE/MAX Multi-Office Sales Group Volume Award for seven of the last eight years.

Deborah Upton, owner of RE/MAX Crest Realty in Vancouver, BC, successfully runs her brokerage from 3 different locations: Vancouver, Hawaii and Ireland. When people ask about her vacations, she is quick to correct them, “I don’t do vacation, but I do work in 3 different places in the world.” This has been the secret to Deborah’s continued success in the industry. Understanding how to properly run a team and delegate responsibility has allowed her freedom and the opportunity to constantly grow her business.

A former teacher and boasting two university degrees, Deborah knows that investing in training and education makes everyone stronger. “I like to empower people to help me grow,” she tells me, stating that, “An organization really is people. Any one person does not make the organization. And I take great comfort in knowing that if something happens to me…the organization is going to press on.”

In this episode of The Richard Robbins Show, Deborah shares her story and gives her advice on why continued education and investing in training is crucial to success, offers strict definitions of what an owner should focus on and achieve, and provides her secret to running a business without compromise from anywhere in the world.
